Hosting a Litter Free Event

Any community event can be made "litter free" with a little extra planning and some creativity.

First - Have lots of visible trash cans and recycling bins available at the event. These should be accessible and in high traffic areas so that event participants are sure to see them.

Second - Promote the event as litter free! Mention the litter free aspect in your advance publicity. Post signs at the event reminding participants that the event is litter free and directing them to nearby trash cans and recycling bins. Volunteers can even wear shirts with slogans like "Help keep (your event) litter free, ask me how!"

Third - Get creative! Are there ways that you can decrease the potential for litter at your event by not handing out flyers, packaging items in reuseable containers, etc.? If the event is a picnic, for example, you can package food items in reuseable plastic containers, use cloth napkins, and use metal utensils.
